Crummy/nice day 6/2/2002
Today started out okay. I came into work and Josh only had 2 more hours of his shift. Things didn't start until I was called back to Layaway to help Brandy get something into the layaway trailer. She's pretty, but always seems to be having "one of those days." She always seems stressed out. I've tried to talk to her before, and I have had some luck in that, but usually I get the feeling she doesn't care to know me. She's around 25 and has kids, and divorced. I feel bad for her. Anyway, there was this big and very heavy box with a desk in it that we needed to get into the trailer. Blake, the new stockman, was helping me. I got into the trailer I and was pulling/steering and he was pushing, only he didn't push. It started falling toward him and I couldn't pull very hard since there was no where to grip onto. Support Manager Brian was there waiting for us to get it in there, and Brandy was there too. She said, "Looks like we have a couple of scrawny stockmen," and she wasn't joking. Me? Scrawny? Sure I'm skinny, but I'm not as weak as most people think by looking at me. It wasn't that big a deal though, and she was having an especially bad day. A little later, she had a little conflict with a CSM and he was being stern, though not mean about it. I finished something and then went on break and walked by the manager's office and saw her inside by herself, crying. :( I didn't know exacly what to do, I didn't want to get into her business, but I felt bad for just leaving her there. I know how it makes you feel a little better when you know someone cares. I took a chance and went inside there and she saw me. I asked if she was alright. I couldn't tell if she answered or not. I talked as nicely as I could and asked if she wanted to talk about it. She shook her head "no." I asked if she wanted me to leave, and she nodded. Then I said, "Okay, but if you want to talk later..." and then I put my hand on her shoulder and she looked at me, then looked back down. I went into the break room. I really hoped she didn't really want me to stay and I was making a mistake by leaving, but at least she knows someone cares. I was doing carts outside and saw her sitting outside talking on a cell phone. I went up to her and gave her 2 thumbs up and said, "You okay now?" She just waved her hand like "everything's fine" but I guess she was concentrating on what the person was saying on the phone.

When my lunch came around, I ate, then went outside to sit on one of the benches on the side of the building. Brandy was there too, talking to another associate. A guy came over to her and sat by her and talked to her too. I finished what I was eating and got up because I didn't want to be nosy and listen. I decided to spend the last half hour of my lunch talking to Annette since I haven't talked to her in a while. She didn't say much, and then said, "Aren't you supposed to have lunch in the break room?" Actually we can have lunch anywhere we want, but I got the hint and left. I talked to Carly a little, who seemed the only one to not mind me hanging around. When I went back to getting carts since they needed to be done from me taking an hour lunch, I went to get a cart that was by a Suburban and after I got it, I noticed that Brandy was sitting in there and talking to that one guy, then they kissed and she left. :) It made me feel better since I knew she must be feeling better.

Later, I got called to Layaway to help her get another thing into the trailer. We needed to wait for a manager to come so he/she could open the back door to get to the trailer. There was only one manager there and he was in a meeting, so Brandy and I waited there for a while until he came out. She was getting a little annoyed since she wanted to leave by 11 and she had other things to do but had to do the trailer thing first. She was talking to another of her friends and was saying how she must seem rude to people who she has just met because she doesn't like talking to them much. Something came up where I think she was wondering why I looked tired. I told her I was just having a day like I felt unwanted. I said, "Annette didn't want me around, and other people it seems don't want to talk, they just give one-word answers to everything." She smiled a little. Then I said, "I don't mean you, you're fine." She said, "Well if it makes you feel any better, I feel really unwanted today, too."

Assistant Manager Fred FINALLY came out and unlocked it for us, and then I went back to carts. Fred came out there to open this gate for me so I could put stuff in there, and he said the lot looks good, I do a really good job and he really appreciates what I do when I close. :) When I was going to clock out to leave, Brandy was heading out and was talking on her phone again and I told her I hope she has a good night. She said thanks.
