Workin' on muh car 3/1/2003
I got up at 8-something despite my departure to bed early this morning. I called up Bro. Jim, who had told me to bring my car over sometime so we could clean it up. Today was Saturday and sunny, and I didn't have work until 4. He said to bring it over. Once I got there, Bro. Don arrived, too, to bring back some dishes or something of theirs that had accidentally been left at his house. When I went inside, I saw Bro. Steve and Sis. Valerie's 2 youngest kids eating breakfast (Bro. Jim and Sis. Judy are their grandparents). Sis Judy asked me if I had eaten breakfast (because she was going to have me eat if I hadn't). I already had breakfast before I left (which was the same thing they were having: pancakes). A little later I heard her asking Bro. Don if he had had breakfast, lol.

We first washed the outside. That was the easy part, believe me. Then we vacuumed it out and used this spray stuff on the carpet and seats (they were really dirty) and used a scrub brush to, well, scrub it. Then I vacuumed it after it dried. He used Armor-All on the dash board, steering wheel, and all the other plastic parts inside and outside the car. It cleans and protects it. Then he made a detail brush for me and he said it really gets in tiny areas where you're fingers and rags can't. After the inside was done, we gave attention to the wheels. They are brushed aluminum wheels which are obviously metal-looking, but not shiny. He said he's been doing detailing for a long time and done many many wheels and this stuff called "Blue Magic" is the best he's found. You really have to give it some elbow-grease for it to work, though, but once you're done, it shines like silverware. This all took a good while to do. 3-4 hours, in fact. He told me that the 2 back tires were only at 20 lbs. of pressure and they are supposed to be 35. He suggested going to Les Schwab (the best tire place around here) and have them put covers on my hub caps since it would make my car look much nicer, and while they're at it, to check the air pressure, rotate my tires, and check my breaks. I went there and the guy said that my front wheels are discontinued ones so they don't make hub caps for them anymore, and the back ones they'd have to order. I asked about the air pressure and rotating my tires, and I threw in balancing my wheels, too. He said that since my back tires are wider than my front ones, they would have to do some extra things and the wait would be around 2 hours since there were a lot of cars in line ahead of me, plus it would be about $60. I said to forget it, I'd do it some other day, but I still wanted them to check the air pressure and balance. I would only have to wait like 30 minutes for that and it would be like $39 assuming all the wheels were unbalanced and they had to adjust them. Unbalanced wheels make the ride bumpy since they don't turn in a perfect circle. Well, they filled them with air and once my ex-highschool classmate, Colt, did the balancing, he told me that they all needed it and that they weren't even close, and he didn't know what the people who previously did it were thinking. He said that with 10 being the best, the balance of my wheels before was about a 2. He also said I'd notice a big difference when driving, which I did a little, but it could've also been me mentally knowing that it's supposed to feel smoother. I forgot to have them check the breaks, though.

At work it was a lot better than yesterday when the opening stockman called in sick and I was the only one there all day. I had carts coming out my ears and they picked that day to give me more carry-outs than I'd had any other day I remember, plus they all had to be really complicated ones. It was an experience, and probably would've been really horrible if I was in a less accepting mood. But today, we had 2 more stockmen than yesterday. Still, I had a lot of carry-outs and the carts suffered because of it. One part that took forever was this guy bought a desk but when he opened it at home, it didn't have any of the screws or anything. He took it here so we could open up another one and give him the screws from that, and then just take the opened one off the shelf. Well, there weren't any more of those desks on the shelf, so I had to look in the back room. The person back there said they don't usually keep desks in the back, but there might be some that they just got, but it would be behind a lot of other stuff, so for me to get a scanner thing (Telxon) to see if we have any in stock before he goes looking for them. I went to the closest register, which was Layaway, and asked Richard to use his Telxon. After trying a few times, he said that he can't get to that with just his login name, so we went to Lynn in the break room. Her login name could bring it up and it said we had 4, one being another one missing pieces that someone else brought in. So the guy in the back room looked through all the stuff and said that he can't find any. I had to go back to the guy and tell him we didn't have any in the back room. He told me that when he first got it, they didn't have any on the shelf so they had to go in a truck or something to get it. Oh yeah, the trailers! I haven't had to get something out of one of those since forever. I went back to the guy in the back and told him they were probably in a trailer. He sighed loudly at how ridiculous this was. He called Support Manager Mike to open a trailer. After he finally got there, he looked at the manual I was holding and pointed out that in this brand, we can't replace parts; only do a refund or exchange, and that for a replacement part, you'd have to call the 1-800 number on it. I went and told the guy that, who wasn't very happy, and he said he wants his money back, but he seemed to understand even if he was upset.

After work, Melissa looked more at my car and took it for a test drive in the parking lot with me in it. She basically had fun in it, and then told me that it's okay, but needs to get up to speed faster and needs to be louder, for attention and for a healthier engine, since wider exhaust pipes are healthier but louder. She also said to check my breaks because something with my left tire was rubbing with something else. I still have to replace the rubber lining on the windows, put on the new windshield wipers I just bought (so they won't skip over parts of the windshield), get covers for the hub caps, get a sound system, and change my oil, not to mention the exhaust and breaks.
