It started out
so good! |
7/30/2003 |
I was looking around for 1989 Camaro IROC-Zs and I
found 2 on autotrader.com that were within 25 miles of my zip code.
I then looked for within 50 miles and found one more, but this one
was a convertible selling for $10,000. A freakin' convertible! This
would be awesome! I figured that since Randy is buying mine for
$2,300, then I would only have to get a loan for $7,700, and that
was assuming the seller would insist on charging no less than 10
grand. While at work yesterday (gosh it's freakin' hot in here. It's
been 100+ degrees here the past few days), I was deciding what to
tell the owner, and I decided on telling him/her that I could do
$8,500. $9,000 if I stretched it (just to get the price down because
I want to pay as little as possible). I was talking it over with
Pat, the people greeter, and she laughed and said that I would be
crazy to buy a convertible in Oregon. It rains 9 months of the year.
My eyes were opened by this sudden dose of reality and right then
and there made up my mind to not get a convertible, meaning my
choices would be narrower and cheaper, meaning I could now more
easily buy one of the other 2 I found on autotrader.com (I searched
many other online car sites and found no 1989 Camaros). One was
selling for $6,995 and the other was for $4,750. I was planning on
going home and looking over both of them when I saw a black IROC-Z
pull into the parking lot and I immediately walked over to the guy
who emerged, wearing a sort of an Australian hat and jean shorts,
looking around late 20s to early 30s. I asked him what year his
car was, since the person I had talked to said to make sure I get an
'89 IROC-Z, since they were the best ones. He said 1989. I told him
that it is exactly what I'm looking for and he said that it's right
there. It sounded like he was saying it was for sale so I asked him
and he said, "Oh yes, it's definitely for sale. For $4,750." I asked
him if it was advertised on autotrader.com and he confirmed that it
was, and I said that I was just going to go home tonight and email
him about it, and he said that now I can see it in person and he
showed it to me. The transmission is rebuilt and other parts are
new, and he said it's in perfect working order, and that he is
selling it because they have 3 cars and can't afford it, so he's
also selling his pickup truck and they are keeping the Ford Mustang
because it's his wife's, though he would rather her have a
Thunderbird as far as a Ford. IROC-Zs come stock with a 700r4
transmission and a 350 engine, which is exactly what I was saving up
to put in my car. He owns Higher Ground coffee shop and I
remembered that I had applied there before I got the Wal-Mart job,
and it's only a few blocks from my bank. I didn't want someone else
to take it, so I decided to get a loan for the whole amount and when
Randy or whomever bought my car, I'd just use that money to pay off
half of it. Everything was going great, and then I went to bed and
woke up this morning.
I called Steve Wasson (my mechanic) and told him what was going
on and I wanted to bring a car by his place to have him inspect it,
and he agreed but told me to call my insurance to see how much more
I'd have to pay for this car. Well, since I was getting a loan, they
said I'd have to upgrade to full coverage, plus this is a faster
car, so basically I'll have to pay $90 a month. That was fine with
me, but they needed the VIN and so I called the coffee shop and his
wife answered the phone and said he's probably still in bed, but
she'd have him call me so I gave her my mom's cell phone number and
took it with me to the bank to apply for a loan. Well, he finally
called after I had to let the person behind me go in front, since I
needed the mileage to complete the loan application, and after it
was submitted, I got partially approved, meaning I needed a co-signer
from lack of credit. Darn credit. I went over the the coffee shop
and he sat down at a table with me while I drank my first-ever
latte, and he gave me the information that the bank needed in order
to make a bill of sale. I took the forms home after telling the guy
(Brad) to come by my bank at 5:15 since they close at 5:30 and he
said he could do that. My parents agreed to co-sign, but first said
for me to call and see if I couldn't get my credit limit to $5,000,
first, because then I could pay for it myself. Well, I couldn't,
which was expected. So then they filled it out, but we were
doubtfull since my dad got laid off 3 months ago and we haven't had
a steady income, the average monthly gross income being $770.
Well, I took it to the bank and crossed my fingers, and they
declined it. Just then, Brad came in and found out what happened,
and tried a little to persuade her to go through with it, but she
said it wasn't up to her. He told me that these things happen, and
no one can know what's going to happen. I asked if he could reserve
it and he said he would if I paid him $100 up front, so I did. He
made up this legal contract (he went to law school) saying that if I
didn't buy the car within 14 days, he could keep the $100 and sell
the car to whomever he wished, but if I bought the car within the
limit, that $100 would go toward my payment for it. I signed it.
Well, my parents didn't like the fact that I signed something like
that and were certain that I had just lost $100 since I don't know
anyone who would co-sign for me and were insistent on going with me
tomorrow to hopefully get my $100 back and call off that deal. My
grandparents (my mom's dad and step-mom) are visiting and they have
a good amount of money, but my dad immediately said that he wouldn't
let me ask them before I even said anything about it. So yeah, now I
have to find someone to co-sign for me, or get $1,175 to put as a
down payment so they will approve me by myself for the loan. So they
can approve me a loan alone, lol. |
