Thanks for wishing me luck with the job interviews. I
guess it boosted my luck enough, because I got hired at Symantec.
^_^
I got there a few minutes late from difficulty of finding the
place, but they weren't ready for me, anyway. There were a few people
scheduled for an interview before me who were still waiting. 1 of
the boys sitting there was drinking cups of water so he could take
the drug test. The lady at the counter asked if I needed a cup, too,
but then said that we had better wait to see if I even pass the test
or not. I asked the boy and his friend what they were applying for,
and they said they were both there for Symantec as well. I finally
got called for an interview and in the lady's office, she sat down
and asked me to tell a little about myself and where I got my
computer experience from. I said that in high school I was the aid
for Mr. Osborn, who was head of the media center, and whenever a kid
would go ask him a computer problem when he would normally go fix
it, he would send them to me and say that I know more about
computers than he does. I was also in the network administrator's
little team of 3 people (Greg, Randy, and me) and would go fix
teachers' computers that weren't working right and I also set up
accounts for students on the network. I said that I'm in charge of
fixing the computer at my dad's home business and I set up a home
network at my house. She was like, "Oh, so you have some knowledge,
then." She asked me what the registry was, obviously as some random
question that lots of people wouldn't know. I said it stored
all... or most of the settings for everything on the computer. She
paused a little and said that she heard it had all the programs and
hardware on the computer and was basically agreeing with me. I said
it has all the settings for all the programs and hardware on the
computer.
She told me that the job would consist of sitting at a computer
with a headset on and answering technical support questions that
customers called in with. I would get 2 weeks of training that would
be Mon-Fri from 8-5. After that, I have to work 8 hours Mon-Fri
within the range of 6am to 6pm. It pays $11 an hour and I can have
up to medical, dental, life, and something else insurance. I only
chose the dental one since we don't see doctors, but rather rely on
God to heal us. The difference with dental is that we do it to our
teeth by eating sweets, so we can't very well ask him to relieve us
of any problems with our teeth that might arrise if we're just going
to keep doing it on purpose. She said I'd have to take a technical
test to better prove my skills. It had 33 multiple choice questions
and they all consisted of Windows 9.x functions. The person who
interviewed me brought me up to the front desk and the lady behind
it graded my test. They said something to each other that I didn't
hear since I wasn't close enough, and then the lady who interviewed
me said to me, "Oh, she's just impressed." The lady who graded it
handed it back to me and said, "You're the only on so far to score
100%."
I had to fill out several papers and then had to take the drug
screening test. Good thing I already had to go to the bathroom!
After the results, the girl said that she'd like to offer me the job
and orientation starts this Friday and she'll call me to tell me
what time it starts.
At home, Randy called and asked if I got the new software for his
BIOS yet. I said I did and I'd come over. It started snowing really
hard on the way there. After I found his house, I went in and popped
in the disk with the BIOS (basic input/output system) upgrade. It
showed that the software on his was from 1998 and the one I was
replacing it with was dated for 2002. After that, it booted from the
Windows XP CD! Yay! I started up the installation process and then
put on Muse's first CD, since he hasn't heard much of them. After
that, I put on 2 They Might Be Giants CDs. The installation kept
having errors on both hard drives we tried and from using both
Windows XP CDs he had. My conclusion is that his motherboard is bad
and not sending the signals between the CD-ROM and hard drive well.
He got his motherboard used from someone anyway.
His sister, Jackie, and her boyfriend, Chris, invited me to stay
for dinner and have homemade tacos. ^_^ I showed Randy how to play
Uno with my rules, and after that we all started a game of Monopoly
on the PlayStation. I kept landing on properties that were already
taken and ended up with only 4 on the board. Randy called Jamie and
talked to her a little until she asked to talk with me. I talked to
her a while and ended up just telling them to take me out of the
game. I always end up talking for a long time whenever I'm talking
with Jamie. It's safe to say that she's by far my favorite person to
talk on the phone with. I find it easier to talk than online. Good
thing I have a job, now, so I can pay for it, hehe. Maybe I'll save
enough money to go visit. That would be way cool. Oh well, laters!
